MISSION POINT RESORTUser reviews for MISSION POINT RESORT
By • Horrible experience
Overall Rating: 2 I have stayed in literally hundreds of hotels and resorts over the past 20+ years, and the Mission Point was probably the worst overall experience I have had. Add to that their outrageous room rates, and the value for the price paid was without question the worst (by far).
Room: Noisy ceiling fan, could feel the springs in the beds, doors would not shut properly, drawer fell out of its track each time opened, blinds were broken, could hear everything (voices and footsteps) in room above us and could hear the hotel staff talking in early morning hours and late night in basement below us, burned out light bulbs, and overall poor quality (two-star) accommodations.
Food: Poor service generally, poor quality and selection of food. On our first night we had to wait 45 minutes for a table, and then sat there for 15 minutes before a waitress came to our table (only after I had to ask the hostess whether there was a waitress assigned to our table). The food was all fried stuff -- hardly a vegetable, fruit or other reasonably healthy choice on the menu. They were frequently out of milk for the free kids meals.
Rates: They advertise a lower rate than you end up paying. Here's how it works: They say that there is a 6% sales tax and an 8% "resort levy/tax". The 8% "resort levy/tax" is not a tax at all. and is not charged by all hotels and resorts on the island. You are just paying 8% more than the advertised room rate. Therefore, their rooms rates are actually 8% higher than advertised. I felt like I had been scammed.
Staff Attitude: When I called the reservation line to ask about what the resort levy/tax was all about, the reservation agent actually hung up nn me! Also, on checkout my room rate was higher than what I had been told, and I was told that the director of operations of the hotel would contact me at my home to discuss it -- it has been a week and I'm still waiting for her call. Overall Rating: 2 Location [2] • Room [2] • Service [2] • Value [6] We've been going to Mackinac Island for years. Sometimes, we go twice a year. We've stayed at the Island House, the Iroquois, the Windemere and Mission Point ... or as we still refer to it, Mission Dis-Appoint. We stayed there for a week about two years and everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. The room was in poor disrepair with peeling paint and missing tiles in the bathroom. Also, the locks on the windows didn't work, leaving me uncomfortable about letting our daughter sleep alone in one of the bedrooms. The pull out sofa bed collapsed into a heap of steel pick-up sticks upon pulling it out. We also had no heat one night during a cold snap. The food was, in our opinion, barely adequate. One of the few restaurants I've ever eaten in that I felt I would have been happier eating my own cooking. Also, the resort is so far from town that we had to use cabs to take us to and from. Several of the resort offerings were not operational either. The staff was responsive to our complaints. They tried to move us to a different room, but along the way, we encountered a couple leaving early for home who informed us that that wing of the resort had no hot water for at least one full day. Toward the end of our vacation, our basic M.O. was to get up, leave Mission Point as soon as possible and stay away as long as possible. It was the only time in all the years we've been going to Mackinac Island that we weren't sad to leave that island paradise at the end of our vacation. I know there are a lot of people who just rave about Mission Point and that's what prompted us to try it in the first place. If it had been just one incident, we would have been fine with it, but it was sooooo many over the entire course. Overall Rating: 8 Location [8] • Room [6] • Service [10] • Value [10] I've been going to Mackinac ever since I was 4, and this is the first place I call when planning a vacation now that I'm an adult. The staff is friendly and accomodating (one time giving our family a free movie on a rainy day). They offer a shuttle service to the ferry docks, but the stroll into town is really not that far. The location is a tradeoff, because you don't hear horses clomping by when you are trying to fall asleep (keep this in mind when picking a room along the main road!), and you have a stunning view of nature outside the window, instead of tacky souvenir shops. The sunrises are breathtaking. Only complaint is that the rooms are a bit small, but there's enough to do that you do not spend that much time in your room.
On an island with astronomical hotel room rates, this is one of the few affordable rooms, and is well worth it. Was this review helpful to you? → YES / NO | | By All-Caribbean Travel user from Detroit, MI • And the Dogs Were allowed TOO!
Overall Rating: 8 My Husband and I went there to get away from Detroit for a weekend. It was wonderful. The staff was outstanding and the accommodations were nice. We were able to bring our two dogs to stay with us for the weekend. They offer babysitting service ... for the dogs. My husband and I had wonderful meals at the International Cafe. They make a great banana split with spumoni ice cream. I recommend getting the meal package. My Husband and I purchased the romantic getaway package, which included a picnic lunch, Dinner for two, breakfast everyday and a horse carriage ride of the island. We found the bar/ restaurant did not have that great of food, but if you are looking for a bar to eat at go to the Pink Pony. Overall the experience was wonderful and relaxing.
The grounds were great to stroll along and it is not a far walk to town and some of the other attractions. Mission Point is much more reasonable with the same advantages as the Grand Hotel. It is a good Choice! Was this review helpful to you? → YES / NO | | By Trip Tutorial User from Paw Paw,MI • The Best Place to RELAXE!!!
Overall Rating: 8 Location [10] • Room [6] • Service [6] • Value [6] If there was a problem they fixed it right away. In the morning for breakfast everything was hot. Rooms were good and always clean. They also take the luggage for you form the dock. I've gone to the Island for many years, and the Mission Point is the only place I recomened for ones to stay at. Overall Rating: 2 Location [10] • Room [4] • Service [4] • Value [2] My husband and I booked a cottage room double ($275/night after taxes and fees) approximately 8 months in advance (for a wedding). This reservation was confirmed both by phone and by mail. Upon check-in, we found our reservation had been canceled due to an incorrect entry into the hotel computer. Apparently someone had entered our arrival date 5 days before our actual arrival and we were considered a "no show." It took us almost an hour to straighten out the situation. It was finally resolved and it turned out that we were to be upgraded to a "Lake View" room for our troubles. Unforutnately, our room was not ready and we had to wait 2 more hours before we could get a room.
We finally got in to find our "Lake View" to be barely that. Also, we were quite surprised to find that the rooms were not air conditioned (however, there was a box fan provided). Being that it was the middle of August, our stay in our room was immediately found to be brutally hot. Additionally, the rooms were very small and poorly decorated. For example, the window treatments looked like something out of grandma's house - they were both out of date and full of dust balls and cobwebs. Furthermore, the wallpaper was peeling as was the enamel on the bathtub. I cannot tell you about the housekeeping service being that our room was not cleaned!
The only people who seemed to be friendly were the young kids who were hired to bring up the bags (and were tipped accoringly). Everyone else had an air of arrogance about them. I know that this is supposed to be a posh resort, but I didn't know that it practised the snobby sterotypes as well! Also, the hotel food was mediocre at best. Most of the stuff was very bland and tasteless. I feel I could get a more gourmet meal at a Sizzler.
Overall, my experience at the Mission Point Hotel was extremely disappointing. I felt that it cost me too much to stay at something equivalent to a Motel 6 although it cost more then a Westin. I was happy to see my two friends get married which was the hotels only saving grace. But, I will end this review with one nice thing - the island itself is magnificent; a definate portrait of natural beauty. If Mission Point has one pro it is definately the scenery! Overall Rating: 2 We drove all the way from NJ for this place where I reserved a lake front room. The room was small, hardly seeing the lake over condos, the bed was a hump in the middle with blanket which was all pilled, and it was hot hot hot with no air conditioning. AT least one of the hotel reviews said it was air conditioned, and I never expected it to be not the guest rooms.
Prices were atrocious considering the hotel levy and tax. Restaurant poor---we ate outside at the fine dining room becaause it was cooler, and the stuffing was coming out of the chair. Some one who wanted to eat there couldn't because they didn't have enough cushions.
Transportation into town is $4 per person.
It was a real disappointment. Was this review helpful to you? → YES / NO | | By Trip Tutorial User from Bloomfield Hills, MI • BEST HOTEL ON THE ISLAND!
Overall Rating: 10 Location [10] • Room [10] • Service [10] • Value [8] My family and I have gone to the island for the past 9 years. I have stayed at 9 different hotels. This year we decided to stay at Mission Point and it is by far the best place to stay at. They completely remodeled the hotel from last year (we ate dinner here last year). My kids love this place. They are never bored and were sad to leave. They have a pool and 2 hot tubs and Starbucks for my husband and I. I loved this place, and will return to Mission Point for many years. There rooms are the highest quality on the island, that I have seen! Was this review helpful to you? → YES / NO | | By • Great wedding location.
Overall Rating: 8 Location [10] • Room [8] • Service [6] • Value [8] This is a great location for a wedding - the gazebo, view of Lake Huron and landscaping are beautiful! Service, staff and rooms were very accomodating and the location is terrific. Was this review helpful to you? → YES / NO | | By worldclasssoxfan from Burbank, Illinois • Absolutely loved it except for two things!
Overall Rating: 6 Location [6] • Room [6] • Service [6] • Value [4] My fiancee', four year old daughter and I went to the island for the first time in September of 2004. We immedietly fell in love with the place. The horse drawn taxi that we took to Mission Point was a very welcome and nice break from the norm. As we arrived at the resort, we were pleased with the grounds and area around the resort. They were very clean and well kept. The staff at the front desk were friendly and helpful. There was a comment made in another review that stated that something about the distance being to far from the town. We found that to be a plus, not a minus. Me and my fiancee'thought the daily trips by horse drawn taxi to be very romantic and our four year old thought they were great. Now to get to the two things we did not like about our stay there. We stayed in a building seprate from the main lodge of the resort...which had NO air conditioning. It would have been worse had the resort not stocked the room with 2 box fans. It was pretty warm the September of 2004, and we could understand the air not being actvated at that time of year in the far northern part of Michigan, but to have no air at all completely ruined our ideas of returning there during the summer months. They other thing was that many of the accomodations were not open, like the theatre and a few others. If it had not been for those things, we probably would have gave FIVE stars for "Overall Experiance". Yet those two things aside, we had a wonderful time and would go back there much more often if those things could be some how changed. Was this review helpful to you? → YES / NO | |
