The staff is great and tries to very helpful. However, the first room I was assigned had the pipes rattling so loudly I could not sleep. The second room they sent me to was dirty. The third was in a smoking floor (I asked for non-smoking), though they claimed the room itself was non-smoking. The last room was the charm. It was clean, smelled great and ... Our room was tiny and dark. The air conditioning didn't work. There were always long lines at the front desk because there were only two front desk staffers to handle a 22-floor hotel. No conc... [more]ierge was on duty at any time to help us buy theater tickets, and the business center was always closed so we couldn't buy them online. All minor irritations and inconveniences one might expect in a cheaper hotel, but not at a hotel that charges these rates. Management gave us a bottle of wine to help soothe our unhappiness. The Melrose Hotel occupies a privileged location on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, close to Central Park, Barney's and Bloomingdales. Formerly the Barbizon, this majestic and ornate building was originally a women's residence, but is now home to the ultra modern, 34,000 square foot Equinox Fitness Center and Spa, which occupies four floors of the recently renovated building. Guests 18 and up receive discounted guest passes to the club, which is complete with an indoor lap pool, exercise equipment and spa services. Guests can catch the subway across the street for quick rides to the Metropolitan, Guggenheim and Whitney museums, and all other things Manhattan. Right out the hotel's front door are Central Park, several of Manhattan's top restaurants and Madison Avenue's prestigious shops.

The Melrose also provides 24 hour room service, high speed Internet access, same day laundry and valet service, and a "sign and dine" program with local restaurants that allow guest to charge their meals to their rooms.

At this Manhattan hotel, guests can revel in breakfasts at the Landmark Restaurant and then take in the "see and be seen" scene at The Library Bar, where they can sip cocktails and have appetizers.

With contemporary décor and light wood furnishings, the guest rooms are small and cozy, but come complete with CD players, cable TVs, movies, armoires with pullout desks, high speed Internet access. The Tower Suites, which are among New York City's most exclusive accommodations, pamper guests with heated towel bars, spa bath robes and slippers, Jacuzzi bath tubs, independent thermostat controls for both rooms and sitting rooms, and entertainment systems with speakers in all rooms.
