First off, the cleaning people were great. No problems there. The room was always cleaned and organized.

The problem was with the rest of the hotel staff. When we checked in, there was no hot water. The kid at the front desk didn't mention this, we only heard about it from another guest as we were entering our rooms. The person who checked us in also made us wait while she ... [more]ordered her evening meal on the telephone from another employee who was out to fetch food.

The next pleasantry was the status of the ice machines. The ice machine was missing from the 3rd floor, and non functional on the 1st and 2nd floors. When I tried to get help from the front desk, there was a nice little sign to let me know that nobody was on duty because they were helping other desks. In reality, she was hiding behind a service door down the hall having a private cellphone conversation. This took 15 mins. When she came back on duty, I smiled and politely asked about the ice machines. She said "there is no ice." No apology. No suggestions. "There is no ice," after 15 mins. The machines did not work the entire week we were there.

Kids run screaming up and down the hall all day and night. Front desk doesn't care. It's not the noise so much as the fact that even the *little* kids somehow manage to shake the entire floor, causing the walls to rattle. I can't imagine what kind of cheap construction causes this. I travel more than I'm at home, and I've never experienced such a flimsey building.

The tiny breakfast nook is only a fraction of the size required to hold the morning masses lined up for food, while the massive lobby area is empty. They could knock down that wall and make the whole breakfast experience significantly better.

The hotel's signature gimmick is their lending library over the fireplace. It had one book. That's petty, I know, but the advertising creates an image of families sitting around browsing piles of books.

I turned the room upside down looking for a guest comment card, manager's name or phone number. Even the cheapest hotels have these, right? Couldn't find any. There wasn't even a customer service 800 number in the hotel directory.

We travel to Erie on business five times a year, and we sure as heck won't come back here. [less]

We stayed at the Country inn and suites in Gettysburg Pa 3 weeks ago and it was lovely. Everything was fresh and clean and exceptionally roomy. We even watched staff on their knees dusting the beautiful wooden baseboards., The Staff bent over backwards to help everyone,and all were extremely kind and helpful. We really like this chain and are usually more than satisfied. As usual, the room was clean and fully equipped with towels and other necessities. We liked the location adjacent to the large outlet malls. This time, however, we did have a complaint.

We booked through the 800 number and expected a suite for the five of us. The 800 number has us listed as "a family studio suit... [more]e." I swear they had told me that the suite was two rooms. Unknowingly, we had reserved what the hotel called a "family studio" instead. This is one large room with two double beds and a pullout couch.
It was fine for the five of us, but we had expected the two rooms to be able to spread out a little, so it was a bit of a disappointment. However, we were in and out all of the time, so for sleeping, it was fine.

The bigger disappointment was the smoke factor. We had reserved non-smoking, which the room was. However, the floor (third) had some smoking rooms, and the corridor reeked of smoke. The room itself I had to say really didn't smell of smoke unless the door to the hallway was open, and the odor drifted in. I expressed my dissatisfaction on both accounts to the manager, but only upon checkout, which was my fault. He said that he could have given us a room on another floor if we had said something when we checked in. I left disappointed by their response.

My advice to anyone who is bothered by smoke to inquire about whether the floor is non-smoking. If you're unhappy with a room, let them know and give them an opportunity to try and make things right. [less]
