Salem Maritime National Historic SiteDescriptionSalem Maritime was established to preserve and interpret the maritime history of New England and the United States. It is the first National Historic Site in the National Park System. Salem Maritime consists of about nine acres of land and 12 historic structures (including Custom House, Derby House, and Narbonne House) along the waterfront in Salem, as well as a Visitor Center in downtown Salem.
The complex includes an exciting attraction: a real live ship. The Friendship is a reconstruction of a 171-foot three-masted ship built in 1797 by shipbuilder Enos Briggs. The original Friendship travelled the world trading for exotic spices, sugar and coffee, making 16 voyages to different countries. Unfortunately, now she does not sail, but visitors have a chance to see what a sail ship was like.
Entrance FeeGuided tours $5 adults, $3 seniors and children 6-15.
Operating HoursDaily, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; closed January 1, Thanksgiving Day, and December 25.
