The Jersey Shore boardwalks are world famous. The first boardwalk was built in Atlantic City in 1870 to prevent patrons from tracking sand into the hotel lobbies. The boardwalks were later expanded allowing room for games of chance and other entertainment. You may recognize landmarks in Atlantic City as those that Charles Darrow chose for the setting of his famous Monopoly game.
