St. Patrick's Cathedral

Description

St. Patrick's Cathedral is the largest gothic-style Catholic Cathedral in the United States. The incredible white-marble-and-stone structure was designed by architect James Renwick. The construction began in 1859. The Cathedral was consecrated in 1879. Additions over the years include the archbishop's house and rectory and the intimate Lady Chapel, designed by Charles Mathews.

  • The Cathedral seats about 2,200 people.

  • The exterior length is about 405 feet; the width is 274 feet.

  • The spires rise 330 feet from street level.

  • The baldachin over the main altar is solid bronze.

  • The St. Michael and St. Louis altar was designed by Tiffany and Company.

  • The Pieta is three times larger than the Pieta in St. Peter's, Rome.
