Drayton HallDescriptionDrayton Hall is the only plantation house on the Ashley River to have survived the Civil War. Its construction was begun in 1738 and was completed in 1742 by European and African American craftsmen. The Georgian-Palladian architecture of Drayton Hall represents the oldest surviving example of its kind in the American South. Through seven generations of Drayton family ownership, the house has remained in nearly original condition. It features the original plaster moldings, opulent hand-carved woodwork, and other ornamental details. The plantation house, standing majestically on a 630-acre site, offers an opportunity to experience history and to imagine the people who lived and worked in a far different time.
