Olympic National Park

Description

Olympic National Park has a diverse and fascinating world. It encompasses three distinctly different ecosystems - glacier capped mountains, over 60 miles of wild Pacific coast and magnificent stands of old-growth, including temperate rain forests. Olympic National Park is also famous for its biological diversity. It has its own distinct array of plants and animals. Fifteen kinds of animals are found here but no where else on Earth.

Olympic National Park is still largely pristine in character - about 95% of the territory is designated wilderness. Many interior parts of the park are accessible only by trail. Scenic drives to Hurricane Ridge, along the Pacific Coast and through the forested valleys of the Sol Duc, Hoh and Quinault Rivers let visitors enjoy stunning views and provide glimpses of Olympic's diversity.

Operating Hours & Seasons

The park itself is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Most roads remain open all year round. Several roads are subject to winter closure because of snow or other weather related problems.
Some campgrounds are open all year.
Visitor center hours can vary throughout the year.

Entrance Fee

Single Visit Vehicle Permit $10 for 7 days
Single Visit Individual Permit $5 for 7 days

Getting There

All park destinations can be reached for U.S. Highway 101, which circumnavigates the Olympic Peninsula.

From the Seattle/Tacoma area, visitors can reach U.S. 101 by several different routes, either by crossing the Sound on one of the Washington State Ferries or by driving south around Puget Sound. Travel time along any of these routes is approximately two-and-a-half to three hours from the Seattle/Tacoma area to Port Angeles, where the main park visitor center and park headquarters are located.
